In Module 1, you learned the basic building blocks for beginning French: greetings, names, simple personal questions, spelling, numbers, dates, articles, plural nouns, pronouns, and the verb ĂŞtre.
You began by learning how to greet people with expressions such as Bonjour, Salut, Bonsoir, Bonjour, monsieur, Bonjour, madame, and Bonjour, tout le monde. You also learned how to ask how someone is with Ça va ?, Comment ça va ?, and Comment allez-vous ?, and how to respond with Ça va bien, Très bien, merci, Pas mal, Comme ci, comme ça, and Pas très bien.
You then learned how to ask and say names with Comment tu t’appelles ?, Comment vous vous appelez ?, and Je m’appelle…. You also practiced asking someone to repeat or spell a name with Tu peux répéter ?, Vous pouvez épeler ?, and Comment ça s’écrit ?
You reviewed ways to say good-bye, including Au revoir, Salut, À bientôt, À plus tard, À demain, and À la prochaine. You also learned useful good wishes such as Bonne journée, Bonne soirée, Bonne nuit, Bonne chance, Bon courage, and Bon voyage.
You studied the French alphabet and learned how to spell names, words, and email addresses. You practiced letters such as A, B, C, D, E, G, H, J, Q, U, W, Y, and Z, as well as accent marks like é, è, ê, ë, and ç.
You learned numbers from 0 to 69, including zéro, un, deux, dix, onze, seize, vingt, trente, quarante, cinquante, and soixante. You practiced useful number expressions such as J’ai vingt ans, Ça coûte quinze dollars, and C’est le numéro cinq.
You also learned the days of the week and months of the year, such as lundi, mardi, mercredi, samedi, dimanche, janvier, février, mai, août, and décembre. You practiced dates and schedules with sentences such as Aujourd’hui, c’est lundi, J’ai un cours mardi, Je travaille le lundi, and Mon anniversaire est en mai.
In the grammar sections, you learned that French nouns have grammatical gender. You used un with masculine singular nouns, une with feminine singular nouns, and des with plural nouns. You practiced examples such as un livre, un stylo, une table, une question, des livres, des étudiants, and des universités.
Finally, you learned subject pronouns and the verb être. You practiced je suis, tu es, il est, elle est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont, and elles sont. You used être to identify people, describe people and things, and say where someone is, with sentences such as Je suis étudiant, Elle est canadienne, Nous sommes en classe, and C’est important.
By the end of Module 1, you should be able to greet people, ask and answer basic personal questions, spell names, use numbers and dates, recognize masculine and feminine nouns, form plurals with des, and use subject pronouns with ĂŞtre.
Module 2 will build on this foundation by helping you ask someone’s age, nationality, and where they are from, describe people, places, and things with adjectives, express possession with avoir, respond negatively with ne… pas and ne… jamais, and ask yes-no questions in informal speech.
