Narrating a Series of Past Events

7.2.1. The Main Idea

To talk about completed past events, French often uses the passé composé.

Je suis allé à Paris l’année dernière.	I went to Paris last year.
J’ai visité un musée.	I visited a museum.
J’ai mangé au restaurant.	I ate at a restaurant.
Je suis rentré à l’hôtel.	I returned to the hotel.

The passé composé is useful for narrating actions that happened one after another.

7.2.2. Basic Past-Time Expressions

hier	yesterday
hier soir	last night / yesterday evening
ce matin	this morning
la semaine dernière	last week
le mois dernier	last month
l’année dernière	last year
pendant le week-end	during the weekend
d’abord	first / at first
ensuite	then / next
après	after / afterwards
puis	then
enfin	finally

7.2.3. Narrating with First, Then, Finally

D’abord, je suis allé au café.	First, I went to the café.
Ensuite, j’ai étudié le français.	Then, I studied French.
Après, j’ai mangé avec des amis.	After that, I ate with friends.
Puis, j’ai regardé un film.	Then, I watched a movie.
Enfin, je suis rentré à la maison.	Finally, I returned home.

7.2.4. Passé Composé with Avoir

Many verbs use avoir in the passé composé.

j’ai étudié	I studied
tu as regardé	you watched
il a mangé	he ate
elle a écouté	she listened
nous avons parlé	we spoke
vous avez travaillé	you worked
ils ont visité	they visited
elles ont acheté	they bought

7.2.5. Examples with Avoir

J’ai étudié le français.	I studied French.
J’ai regardé un film.	I watched a movie.
J’ai écouté de la musique.	I listened to music.
J’ai mangé au restaurant.	I ate at a restaurant.
J’ai parlé avec mes amis.	I spoke with my friends.
J’ai acheté un café.	I bought a coffee.

7.2.6. Passé Composé with Être

Some movement verbs use être in the passé composé.

je suis allé	I went, masculine speaker
je suis allée	I went, feminine speaker
tu es allé	you went, masculine
tu es allée	you went, feminine
il est allé	he went
elle est allée	she went
nous sommes allés	we went, masculine or mixed
nous sommes allées	we went, feminine
vous êtes allé	you went, formal masculine
vous êtes allée	you went, formal feminine
vous êtes allés	you went, plural masculine or mixed
vous êtes allées	you went, plural feminine
ils sont allés	they went, masculine or mixed
elles sont allées	they went, feminine

With être, the past participle agrees with the subject.

7.2.7. Common Être Verbs for Beginner Narration

arriver	arrivé	to arrive
partir	parti	to leave
sortir	sorti	to go out
venir	venu	to come
revenir	revenu	to come back

Je suis rentré à la maison.	I returned home. masculine speaker

7.2.9. A Simple Past Story

L’année dernière, je suis allé à Paris.	Last year, I went to Paris.
D’abord, j’ai visité un musée.	First, I visited a museum.
Ensuite, j’ai mangé dans un restaurant.	Then, I ate in a restaurant.
Après, j’ai regardé un spectacle.	After that, I watched a show.
Enfin, je suis rentré à l’hôtel.	Finally, I returned to the hotel.

7.2.10. Negative Past Sentences

In the passé composé, ne… pas goes around the auxiliary verb.

Je n’ai pas étudié.	I did not study.
Je n’ai pas regardé le film.	I did not watch the movie.
Je ne suis pas allé au café.	I did not go to the café. masculine speaker
Je ne suis pas allée au café.	I did not go to the café. feminine speaker
Elle n’est pas sortie.	She did not go out.
Ils ne sont pas venus.	They did not come.

7.2.11. Core Patterns

past-time expression + passé composé	completed past action
d’abord + passé composé	first, something happened
ensuite + passé composé	then, something happened
après + passé composé	after that, something happened
puis + passé composé	then, something happened
enfin + passé composé	finally, something happened
avoir + past participle	j’ai mangé, j’ai étudié
être + past participle	je suis allé, je suis sorti

B : D’abord, j’ai étudié. Ensuite, j’ai mangé avec des amis.	B: First, I studied. Then, I ate with friends.
A : Et après ?	A: And after that?
B : Après, je suis rentré à la maison.	B: After that, I returned home.

7.2.15. Checkpoint

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to narrate a simple series of past events with d’abord, ensuite, après, puis, and enfin, use the passé composé with avoir and common être verbs, and form basic negative past sentences.
