Ordering in a Café

5.2.1. The Main Idea

To order in a café, you can use je voudrais, meaning I would like.

Je voudrais un café.	I would like a coffee.
Je voudrais un thé.	I would like a tea.
Je voudrais un croissant.	I would like a croissant.
Je voudrais une eau.	I would like a water.

Je voudrais is polite and useful in cafés, restaurants, shops, and many everyday situations.

5.2.2. Getting Someone’s Attention

Excusez-moi.	Excuse me.
Bonjour.	Hello.
Bonsoir.	Good evening.
S’il vous plaît.	Please.

5.2.3. Ordering Politely

Je voudrais un café, s’il vous plaît.	I would like a coffee, please.
Je voudrais un thé, s’il vous plaît.	I would like a tea, please.
Je voudrais un croissant, s’il vous plaît.	I would like a croissant, please.
Je voudrais une eau, s’il vous plaît.	I would like a water, please.
Je voudrais un sandwich, s’il vous plaît.	I would like a sandwich, please.

Vous avez une carte ?	Do you have a menu?
Je peux voir la carte ?	Can I see the menu?
La carte, s’il vous plaît.	The menu, please.
Qu’est-ce que vous avez ?	What do you have?

5.2.6. Asking for Something Else

Je voudrais aussi un croissant.	I would also like a croissant.
Je voudrais encore un café.	I would like another coffee.
Je voudrais de l’eau.	I would like some water.
Je voudrais du sucre.	I would like some sugar.
Je voudrais du lait.	I would like some milk.

Use aussi for also. Use encore for another / more.

Sur place ou à emporter ?	For here or to go?
Sur place.	For here.
À emporter.	To go.
C’est pour ici.	It is for here.
C’est à emporter.	It is to go.

5.2.8. Asking the Price

C’est combien ?	How much is it?
Ça coûte combien ?	How much does it cost?
Combien coûte un café ?	How much does a coffee cost?
Ça fait combien ?	How much does that come to?

5.2.9. Paying

Je paie par carte.	I am paying by card.
Je paie en espèces.	I am paying in cash.
Par carte, s’il vous plaît.	By card, please.
En espèces, s’il vous plaît.	In cash, please.
L’addition, s’il vous plaît.	The bill, please.
Le reçu, s’il vous plaît.	The receipt, please.

Qu’est-ce que vous voulez ?	What do you want? / What would you like?
Voilà.	Here you go.
Ça fait cinq euros.	That comes to five euros.
