7.6.1. The Main Idea

When a sentence has two verbs, the first verb is conjugated and the second verb stays in the infinitive.

Je veux aller au cinéma.	I want to go to the movie theater.
Je peux acheter les billets.	I can buy the tickets.
Je dois finir mes devoirs.	I have to finish my homework.

With two verbs, object pronouns, y, and en usually go directly before the infinitive.

7.6.2. Y with Two Verbs

Use y to replace a place phrase with à, au, à la, à l’, or aux.

Je veux aller au cinéma.	Je veux y aller.
Je peux aller au café.	Je peux y aller.
Je vais aller à l’université.	Je vais y aller.
Je dois aller à la réunion.	Je dois y aller.

7.6.3. En with Two Verbs

Use en to replace a phrase with de, du, de la, de l’, or des.

Je viens du café.	J’en viens.
Je vais revenir du cinéma.	Je vais en revenir.
Je veux parler de ce film.	Je veux en parler.
Je peux acheter des pommes.	Je peux en acheter.

7.6.4. Direct Object Pronouns with Two Verbs

Use le, la, l’, and les to replace direct objects.

Je peux acheter les billets.	Je peux les acheter.
Je veux voir le film.	Je veux le voir.
Je vais porter cette chemise.	Je vais la porter.
Je voudrais essayer ces chaussures.	Je voudrais les essayer.
Je dois finir mes devoirs.	Je dois les finir.

7.6.5. Negative Sentences

In negative sentences, ne… pas goes around the conjugated verb. The pronoun still goes before the infinitive.

Je ne peux pas y aller.	I cannot go there.
Je ne veux pas le voir.	I do not want to see it.
Je ne peux pas les acheter.	I cannot buy them.
Je ne vais pas la porter.	I am not going to wear it.
Je ne dois pas en parler.	I must not talk about it.

Tu veux aller au cinéma ?	Oui, je veux y aller.
Tu peux acheter les billets ?	Oui, je peux les acheter.
Tu veux voir le film ?	Oui, je veux le voir.
Tu vas porter cette chemise ?	Oui, je vais la porter.
Tu dois finir les devoirs ?	Oui, je dois les finir.
Tu peux parler de ce spectacle ?	Oui, je peux en parler.
