Attending and Seeing Events

7.4.1. The Main Idea

In French, assister à means to attend, not to assist or to help.

assister à	to attend
voir	to see
regarder	to watch / to look at

Use assister à for events you attend, such as concerts, matches, plays, and lectures.

7.4.2. Assister à

J’assiste à un concert.	I am attending a concert.
Tu assistes à un match.	You are attending a game.
Il assiste à une pièce.	He is attending a play.
Elle assiste à une conférence.	She is attending a lecture / conference.
Nous assistons à un spectacle.	We are attending a show.

7.4.3. Important Warning

Assister à is a false friend. It looks like English assist, but it does not mean to help.

J’assiste à un concert.	I am attending a concert.
J’aide mon ami.	I am helping my friend.

Do not say j’assiste mon ami when you mean I help my friend in beginner French. Use aider.

7.4.4. Voir

The verb voir means to see.

nous voyons	we see
vous voyez	you see
ils voient	they see
elles voient	they see

The forms je vois, tu vois, il voit, and ils voient sound very similar, but the spelling changes. The nous and vous forms use y: nous voyons, vous voyez.

Tu vois le film ?	Do you see the movie?
Il voit un spectacle.	He sees a show.
Elle voit une exposition.	She sees an exhibition.
Nous voyons des animaux sauvages.	We see wild animals.

J’assiste à un concert.	I am attending a concert.
Je vois un concert.	I see a concert.
J’assiste à un match.	I am attending a game.
Je vois un match.	I see a game.
J’assiste à une pièce.	I am attending a play.
Je vois une pièce.	I see a play.

Use assister à when the focus is being present at an event.

Use voir when the focus is seeing or watching something.
