Expressing One’s Level of Interest in a Topic

15.1.1. The Main Idea

To express interest in a topic, French often uses s’intéresser à, which means to be interested in.

Je m’intéresse à l’histoire.	I am interested in history.
Je m’intéresse à la culture.	I am interested in culture.
Je m’intéresse aux langues.	I am interested in languages.
Je ne m’intéresse pas à la politique.	I am not interested in politics.

The structure is:

s’intéresser à + topic

to be interested in + topic

S’intéresser is a pronominal verb, so the reflexive pronoun changes with the subject.

je m’intéresse à	I am interested in

Ça m’intéresse beaucoup.	That interests me a lot.

Je m’intéresse beaucoup à l’environnement.	I am very interested in the environment.
Je trouve ce sujet fascinant.	I find this topic fascinating.
C’est un sujet passionnant.	It is an exciting / fascinating topic.

15.1.5. Expressing Moderate Interest

Ça m’intéresse un peu.	That interests me a little.
Ce sujet m’intéresse assez.	This topic interests me somewhat / quite a bit.
Je m’intéresse un peu à la politique.	I am a little interested in politics.
Je trouve ça intéressant.	I find that interesting.
C’est intéressant, mais ce n’est pas ma priorité.	It is interesting, but it is not my priority.

15.1.6. Expressing Little or No Interest

Ça ne m’intéresse pas beaucoup.	That does not interest me much.
Ça ne m’intéresse pas vraiment.	That does not really interest me.
Je ne m’intéresse pas à ce sujet.	I am not interested in this topic.
Ce sujet ne m’intéresse pas.	This topic does not interest me.
Je trouve ça ennuyeux.	I find that boring.

15.1.8. À + Definite Article

Because s’intéresser uses à, remember these contractions:

à + le = au	Je m’intéresse au cinéma.
à + la = à la	Je m’intéresse à la culture.
à + l’ = à l’	Je m’intéresse à l’histoire.
à + les = aux	Je m’intéresse aux langues.

Examples:

Je m’intéresse au cinéma.	I am interested in cinema.
Je m’intéresse à la politique.	I am interested in politics.

Use parce que, car, or puisque to explain why a topic interests you.

Je m’intéresse à l’histoire parce qu’elle aide à comprendre le présent.	I am interested in history because it helps us understand the present.
Je m’intéresse aux langues parce qu’elles sont utiles.	I am interested in languages because they are useful.
Ce sujet m’intéresse car il est important.	This topic interests me because it is important.
Puisque ce sujet est essentiel, il faut en parler.	Since this topic is essential, we have to talk about it.

15.1.10. With Y

Because s’intéresser à + topic uses à, you can replace the topic with y.

Tu t’intéresses à l’histoire ?	Are you interested in history?
Oui, je m’y intéresse.	Yes, I am interested in it.
Tu t’intéresses à la politique ?	Are you interested in politics?
Non, je ne m’y intéresse pas.	No, I am not interested in it.
